G-Kup Technologies Corp. has developed entirely compostable single serve coffee pods made mainly from
molded bagasse and poly(lactic acid). These pods aim to replace non-degradable Keurig single use coffee pods
that are becoming a growing environmental problem. G-Kup wants to work with us to explore a range of
different biodegradable polyesters to improve the performance and degradation of their product. They will
provide us with the facilities and expertise to fabricate the cups. We have developed a methodology to
incorporate alcohols in biodegradable polymers in a living fashion and will explore the effect of different
biodegradable material in the cups.
This project has the potential to have a significant impact in the single use beverage industry and have an
important impact on the environmental footprint of these expanding products. In addition, there is great
training potential for the academic researcher involved, as they will have the opportunity to interact with
directly with G-Kup Technology Corp. and get valuable experience in the industrial and business aspects of
green polymer technology. In the long term they may get the opportunity to find a permanent position as a
researcher with the company.
