Increased usage of renewable energy is required to reduce climate change. Wastewater from housings releases avast amount of energy which is lost to the soil. The @Source-Energy Pipe system is a new type of a sewagewater pipe which integrates a geothermal pipe in its concrete. Heat from the sewage water and from the soil canbe removed via conduction by a heat transfer fluid inside the geothermal pipe. This energy can be used to heator cool housings throughout the year.In this proposed research, the main objective is to create methods to evaluate the long-term efficiency of the@Source-Energy Pipe system under changing weather conditions. A numerical model will be used to simulatethe heat flow during heating and cooling phases of the @Source-Energy Pipe system for a single house. In asecond step, the attempt will be extended to a whole city quarter where more and more houses will beconnected to the @Source-Energy Pipe system. The key to the technology transfer is proof that the systemworks reliable in the harsh climate of the Canadian Prairies. The results, as well as the modelling process itself,will allow the industry partner Lafarge to develop into the installation of the @Source-Energy Pipe system insewage pipelines in the Canadian Prairie. Thus, Lafarge will be able to protect better the environment andwhich will allow Lafarge to bid on more projects.
