Jet fuel production from biogas via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

One of the few carbon-based fuels that do not have a simple carbon-free substitute, is aviation turbine fuel orjet fuel. Jet fuel produced from renewable sources must comply with existing fuel specifications. Incollaboration with Greenfield Global it was demonstrated that a commercially available H-ZSM-5 catalystcould be used without any modification for the combined oligomerization and aromatization of a mixture oflight hydrocarbons to produce a kerosene-rich product (NSERC Engage grant). In addition to the proof ofconcept work performed, a longer laboratory pilot run was conducted to collect ~5 L of reaction product, whichis a mixture of paraffins and olefinic oligomers. The purpose of this work (NSERC Engage Plus grant) is toperform the refining steps necessary to turn this product into a semi-synthetic jet fuel blending component.The reaction product will be hydrotreated and distilled to obtain different boiling fractions. The viablekerosene boiling range will be determined and the appropriate fraction will be characterized to determinewhether it meets applicable DEF-STAN 91-91 and ASTM D 7566 specifications for a semi-synthetic aviationturbine fuel blending component.
