Semi-synthetic jet fuel production, blending, and characterization

There is interest to increase the amount of transport fuel derived from renewable resources such as biomass and organic waste. In this study, the focus is on the production of semi-synthetic jet fuel. Semi-synthetic jet fuel is 50:50 blend of synthetic and petroleum derived kerosene that meets fuel specifications. Kerosene is fuel with a typical boiling range of 160-260 °C. The study deals mainly with the refinery production of the synthetic kerosene from oil obtained by indirect liquefaction, which involves different conversion processes, such as hydroprocessing. Once the kerosene is produced, it must be distilled, blended and characterized to confirm that it meets fuel specifications for Jet A-1, the type of fuel used in commercial aviation. Additionally, the work will include an assessment of the integration of by-products for Canadian application. This work forms part of a larger industrially led project to establish production of renewable jet fuel in Canada.
