This project will study the feasibility of determining the condition of hydraulic pumps via their dynamic response. A pump suffering from mechanical wear and erosion will experience more leakage and different friction on its internal components. These changes in leakage and friction will change the pump's response to changes in flow command or back pressure. This study will create a dynamic model of the particular pump involved in the study and quantify the changes in pump response, with the aim of evaluating the service life remaining in the pump from dynamic pressure measurements. This study is related to a separate study that will generate a large number of pumps with varying degrees of wear. Those pumps were highly instrumented over their lifetime so the wear history is well known. These pumps will be used as test subjects for the current proposal. In contrast to previous studies that have concentrated on artificial faults introduced into the pump, these realistically worn pumps will provide a more accurate cross section of typical faults and wear characteristics.
