Electrification of the public transit services is crucial for Canada's long-term strategy to reduce transportationrelated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. St. Albert Transit (StAT) is leading this effort by actively replacingits diesel bus fleet with the state-of-the-art electric buses. On May 23, 2017, St. Albert Transit celebrated thearrival of three BYD K9 electric buses, while another four electric buses are expected to join the fleet in priorto the end of March 2018. Although the electric buses are beneficial for reducing GHG emissions, charging afleet of electric buses can significantly increase the electrical loading of the bus terminals. Since upgrading thepower supply infrastructures can involve high monetary expenditure which, in turn, increases the public transitfares, an optimal planning of system upgrade and the smart charging of electric buses are of paramountimportance. In this project, we will investigate a fundamental problem for the efficient planning and operationof public transit services with electric buses, i.e., the mathematical modelling of electric bus charging demand.In particular, a data-driven approach will be developed in this project for electric bus charging demandmodelling, facilitated by the availability of a large number of measurements from various onboard sensors ofelectric buses.
