This equipment proposal is intended to support the research program “Additive Manufacturing for Multi-Functional Composites” within the Toronto Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (TIAM). The equipment requested in this grant application is a customized experimental research-level additive manufacturing platform for studying the creation of novel multi-functional composite materials utilizing 3D printing techniques. By embedding various functional composite materials within the raw 3D printer filaments, it is possible to create highly organized structures that can perform various functionalities simultaneously. The major applications for the 3D printed multi-functional smart materials are: Energy storage; Energy harvesting; Smart sensing; and Actuation. Deployment of this new manufacturing system can tailor the capabilities of the final product by tuning the constituent materials at the molecular level, allowing the material inherent properties to be fully utilized in the end application.
