Major challenges in water and waste-water treatment include: Nutrient removal from waste-water; safe utilization of treated waste-water and digested biosolids; slow digestion of wastewater biosolids; protozoan cysts control in drinking water treatment; and absence of affordable disinfection methods in underprivileged countries. This research program will employ electrochemistry-based emerging technologies to provide solutions to these challenges. Bioelectrochemical systems with ion exchange membranes will be investigated for energy-efficient separation of nutrients and heavy metals from wastewater. Robust biosolids digestion is proposed by incorporating bioelectrochemical systems in conventional anaerobic digesters. Electrode reactions with copper and silver will be studied for effective and inexpensive drinking water disinfection.
