The research program proposed belongs to the broad area of computational and discrete geometry driven by open research problems investigating Voronoi diagrams and contact graphs of sphere packings (resp., spherical codes), (partial) coverings by planks and cylinders, illumination (resp., X-raying) of convex polyhedra as well as the geometry of ball-polyhedra (focusing on rigidity of ball-polyhedra and dynamics of billiard trajectories in ball-polyhedra). Some of these problems are notoriously difficult and are intimately related to deep questions in other fields of mathematics such as analysis, coding theory, combinatorics, differential geometry, mathematical programming and optimization, number theory and topology.
