Nonlinear microscopy is revolutionizing the imaging and characterization of biomaterials. The simultaneous integration of several imaging techniques is known as multimodal microscopy. We will continue the development of novel chemically-specific and label-free nonlinear optical imaging modalities that can be integrated into our custom-built ultrafast-laser-based nonlinear optical microscope, for true multimodal nonlinear-optical microscopy. Such modalities will include second-harmonic generation and two-photon fluorescence, as well as stimulated vibrational techniques such as CARS and SRS. This research will then enable rapid micro-spectroscopic characterization of structure and dynamic processes in natural and hybrid biomaterials of technological and biomedical importance to Canada.
