The space environment above our atmosphere is home to countless natural particle accelerators that drive charged particles (electrons and ions) to very high energies. Canadians have a particularly good view of two of these particle accelerators. In Northern Canada, the aurora is the beautifully visible result of one of them. Farther south, the eerie sounds of the Van Allen radiation belts echo through the Very Low Frequency radio band. My research involves using and developing satellites and ground-based instruments to probe the physical processes at work in these accelerators, and better understand how they modify the near-Earth space environment.
