Gravity, one of the fundamental forces of nature, is governed by Einstein's equations of general relativity. This research uses supercomputers to investigate gravity in the most extreme circumstances: during collisions of black holes and neutron stars. Only through these calculations can we learn how space-time behaves when it is warped and whirled around by black holes. Results of these calculations are then used to measure gravitational waves from black holes in our Universe and to decipher their meaning: We will learn how many black holes exist in the Cosmos, their locations, and their important properties like sizes and spins.
