The Canada Research Chair in Genes and the Environment will examine genetic changes to animal populations caused by humans. The focus will be on contaminant exposures that induce inherited mutations, and habitat modifications by humans that cause genetic adaptation in animal populations. Germline mutations are the raw material for natural selection, but they can also cause deleterious effects in individuals and populations. Genetic adaptation to conditions created by humans is an accelerated form of evolution. Understanding and regulating exposures that increase mutation frequency, or that cause rapid evolution, are key components of protecting the environment and health.
