英文摘要
DNA damaging agents are common in the environment, and for decades researchers have been attempting to determine whether ambient levels of environmental contaminants affect mutation rates in cells that become sperm and eggs (germline mutations). These mutations are of particular interest because they provide the raw material for natural selection, but also cause inherited abnormalities and disease. This research program examines germline mutation frequencies in model species (mice and earthworms) as well as natural populations of birds. The ultimate objective of the research is to determine the types of environmental exposures that lead to increased mutation rates, and may thereby pose a risk to individuals or populations. In addition, we seek to understand what types of mutations occur and are transmitted to subsequent generations. The outcomes will be of interest to a broad range of scientists, including geneticists, ecologists, evolutionary biologists, ecotoxicologists, and health scientists.
