The CRC in Stressed Aquatic System brings to Laurentian University the ability to meet its strategic research goals in Environmental Sciences, in relation to the protection and restoration of Boreal Shield aquatic ecosystem. These goals recognize the significance of Laurentian's location near the center of Canada's largest ecozone, as well as its proximity to one of the world's largest mining and smelting complexes. Research is designed to increase our understanding of the role of watershed processes in recovery from different types of disturbance (e.g. mining, logging, fire) and the effects of new stressors as industrial development extends into northern watersheds.
