The Tier 1 CRC in Stressed Aquatic Systems brings to Laurentian University the ability to meet its mission statement Clean Water Now and Forever as well as its strategic research goals in Environmental Science, through research designed to protect and restore Boreal Shield aquatic ecosystems. These goals recognize the significance of Laurentians location near the center of the Boreal Shield, Canadas largest ecozone, containing much of our freshwater but also an area containing most of our mineral resources. Laurentian aspires to be recognized as the leading mining research school in the world with a CRC position focussed on essential aspects of the mining cycle dealing with protection and restoration of valued ecosystem services (e.g. clean water, fish safe for consumption). Dr. Gunns fundamental research is also designed to increase our understanding of the role of watershed processes in recovery for different types of disturbance (e.g. insect infestations, climate change) as industrial development extends into northern watersheds.
