Unravelling the multiple mechanisms underlying biodiversity spatial patterns is a key challenge and a cutting-edge research goal in ecology. The proposed research program is aimed at developing improved spatial modelling frameworks and using them to address novel hypotheses about the fundamental ecological and evolutionary principles that underlie biodiversity. The program will be interdisciplinary, combining expertise involving ecology, evolution, geography, informatics and statistics. The developed approaches will thereby help us to elucidate the complex processes driving spatial biodiversity patterns, to relate the modelled patterns of biodiversity to current or new theory, and to generate predictive models for biodiversity conservation and management purposes.
