Unravelling the multiple mechanisms underlying patterns of biodiversity from small to large geographic scales is a key challenge and a cutting-edge research goal in ecology. The proposed research program is aimed at developing improved quantitative frameworks to uncover complex biodiversity patterns and derive novel hypotheses about the fundamental ecological and evolutionary principles that underlie these patterns. The program will be interdisciplinary, combining expertise involving ecology, evolution, geography, informatics and statistics. The developed approaches will assist in generating quantitative tools for biodiversity conservation and management purposes.
