What does it mean to be human? This is a question in which we are all interested; one that has immense resonance. One way to answer this question is by studying other animals: if we understand what it means not to be human, we can identify those areas of human life that appear to be unique. In my research, I study the ecology, development and social life of baboons and vervet monkeys, using an 'embodied cognition' framework, and apply these insights to our own species, to identify those processes that have allowed humans to build and sustain their distinctive cultures.
