Prion diseases are fatal and neurodegenerative disorders that can be acquired by infection, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and chronic wasting disease in cervids. The infectious agent called prion is composed of a misfolded form of the cellular prion protein PrPc, termed PrPSc. To date, no curative therapy is available. In this research program the question will be addressed how prion infection influences cellular metabolism. Mechanisms of prion shedding from infected animals will be investigated and novel anti-prion molecules will be established. These studies will identify novel drug targets and applicable molecules for combating prion diseases.
