The research programme focuses on the environmental effects of low dose radiation exposure. This is a major issue due to the increased interest in increasing energy production from nuclear power generation in response to global warming. Both uranium mining and actual power generation produce low level contamination of the environment; however, the biological mechanisms and impacts of such contamination are not at all understood, nor is the interaction between radioactive and chemical pollution understood. The proposed programme builds on the unique research and experience of the Chairholder in these areas.
