This proposal seeks to investigate the phenomenology and mechanisms involved in the physical transmission of radiation induced bystander signals and downstream events subsequent to the initial interaction of radiation with matter. We have demonstrated that the initial events occur without the need for transfer or sharing of liquid medium between cells precluding a wholly chemical mechanism. The elucidation of biophysical, biochemical and bioenergetics pathways involved in signal transduction is the main objective of the proposal, however the results should identify new targets for radiation protection and for cancer therapy and should result in new concepts in radiobiology.
