My research program develops fluorescent materials and technologies for the analysis of biological molecules toward improved health care. In this proposal, the focus is on the use of special materials called quantum dots and polymer dots to enable smartphone-based diagnostics for protein biomarkers and cell types, and novel probes for elucidating complex cell processes relevant to the pathology of diseases such as cancers. The long-term outcomes of this research will be new clinical devices and new tools for expanding fundamental biomedical knowledge. The impacts for Canadians will be more efficient disease diagnoses and therapies.
