In the last decade, electroactive two-dimensional (2D) materials family including graphene have seen an explosive growth. Intense interest is generated by the possibility of rationally designing 2D material nanostructures that may ultimately lead to novel sensors able to detect analyte at the molecular level, be it in biological or chemical systems. In the proposed program the following key challenges will be addressed: (i) the growth of next generation of electroactive 2D materials family including graphene, boron nitride and transition metal dichalgonides (e.g. MoS2 and WSe2). (ii) Exfoliation and subsequent characterization of the V group of the periodic table (P, As, Sb, Bi). iii) 2D material functionalization and devices fabrication to design high-performance sensors for environmental monitoring. This ambitious goal defines a special opportunity to join the international effort to map out the 2D-material family and to chart their properties that is only now underway.
