Les algues marines possèdent un immense potentiel de molécules originales d'intérêt biologique, peu exploré à**l'heure actuelle. Des ingrédients à base d'algues sont néanmoins offerts sur les marchés alimentaires, ou**cosmétiques. Un des défis scientifiques du secteur des biotechnologies marines est la mise en évidence de**l'action biologique de ces molécules par le développement d'approches méthodologiques permettant leur**détection et leur caractérisation. L'étude de l'action d'extraits de macroalgues sur les fonctions biologiques**constitue un champ d'études très original visant à accroître la valorisation des algues du nord du Golfe**Saint-Laurent (nGSL). Les algues rouges possèdent un contenu élevé en mycosporines (« mycosporine-like**amino acids » ou MAAs), qui possèdent des propriétés antioxydantes, et ressemblent aux acides aminés**contenus dans le corps humain. Ces MAAs ont ainsi de bonnes chances d'avoir des actions biologiques,**notamment en atteignant le cerveau. Il apparaît donc pertinent de déterminer le contenu en MAAs dans les**extraits, de les caractériser, les identifier et de confirmer que les méthodes de détection développées**fonctionnent aussi dans les tissus biologiques (sang, urine, foie, cerveau...). Les résultats de ces travaux**serviront de base pour déterminer ultérieurement l'intérêt de procéder à une mise à l'échelle de production**d'extraits enrichis en MAAs pour une commercialisation subséquente.
