As principal investigator and team leader, Prof. Chapman has led the design, specification, construction, and initial operations of the world-leading BioMedical Imaging and Therapy (BMIT) facility at the Canadian Light Source (CLS). BMIT is now among the global leaders in human and animal health research using synchrotron radiation. In parallel with personally guiding the development of this uniquely Canadian resource, he has developed extensive biomedical and clinical collaborations enabling new research from cancer detection to bone health to cystic fibrosis. These collaborations and his continued development and application of advanced imaging technologies provide a rich multidisciplinary environment for training of HQP. ***He and collaborators have used synchrotron facilities to develop and commercialize imaging technologies for pre-clinical applications, including novel studies of genetics, stroke, and heart attack. ***He has developed and proposes to exploit new approaches to x-ray functional imaging and developed methods to reform the imaging beam at synchrotrons to better match the sizes of subjects. He has developed a completely new approach to characterize synchrotron x-ray source properties which may revolutionize the ability to measure, stabilize, and better utilize synchrotron light beams. He proposes to exploit these new developments while training the next generation of x-ray instrumentation scientists in a very interdisciplinary environment.
