Protecting Canada's infrastructure is fundamentally important to public safety and to all sectors of the economy. Even without loss of life, a major catastrophic event, such as an earthquake, may produce significant damage, economic loss and place major strains on Canada's and Canadians' well being. The development and implementation of new self-centering resilient systems offer a new approach to designing structures by eliminating structural damage and protecting critical components, thus allowing for rapid recovery even after major earthquakes.
