High solids anaerobic digestion (HSAD) as a waste management practice can provide dual benefits of**diversion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) from landfills and recovery of bioenergy**and value-added resources. In addition to generation of renewable bioenergy, residuals from HSAD process can**be potentially applied as a soil amendment to enhance soil properties. However, land application of digestate**containing pathogens poses significant risks to public health. Therefore, residuals from HSAD must be**disinfected before land application. The commonly used processes to further reduce pathogens (PFRPs) include**heat drying, chemical stabilization, etc. However, these techniques have been extensively used for residuals**from the wet or low-solids AD, and literature provides limited information whether these methods can**efficiently reduce pathogens in residuals from HSAD. This project aims to investigate the various PFRPs for**improving the environmental sustainability of HSAD.
