A novel foundation system is proposed to support sound walls (also known as noise barriers or acoustical barriers). It is designed**to support the complex loading system involving small axial load but large lateral load and bending moment. Sound walls are**utilized for mitigation of ambient noise due to traffic or industrial and commercial activities. They are conventionally supported by**drilled shafts, but Atlantic Industries Limited is seeking foundation systems that provide enhanced lateral capacity, cost-savings,**and fast installation and utilization. Standard Steel H piles can meet the requirements for efficient installation, but lack the required**lateral stiffness to adequately support sound walls. Working with Dr. Naggar at UWO, Atlantic Industries Ltd will investigate**alternative methodologies to increase the lateral capacity of the sound wall foundation while reducing the installation time. The**testing program undertaken in the proposed study will assess the performance of the proposed foundation systems and help**develop design guidelines for the implementation of the proposed foundation system in sound walls construction.
