Electric vehicles (EVs) reduce fossil fuels usage and have a lesser environmental impact. However, energy storage capacity and driving range are major concerns in EVs. The main objective of this Canada Research Chair is to address these challenges by (1) developing a reliable energy storage system that exploits the advantages of multiple energy sources that have either high specific energy (such as metal-air batteries) or high specific power (such as SuperCapacitors, which can provide burst-mode power, facility to recover braking-energy, and have large charge/discharge cycles); (2) designing improved power converters and electric motors; and (3) developing an optimized energy and power management system.
