Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex mixture of compounds that influences strongly the toxicity of**contaminants in waters. Fluorescent DOM has been related to odor and production of carcinogenic products in**water treatment plants. Monitoring fluorescent DOM offers rapid and (near) real time measurement of water**quality and DOM composition. Current methods use fragile, bulky and heavy laboratory equipment 3D**spectrometers which can be cost prohibitive when working from remote monitoring sites such as in the**Canadian Arctic. The project aims to develop a new portable, sensitive and rugged 3D fluorescence**spectrometer based on the recently developed bright and stable LED technology by Wilson Analytical Services.**Our goals are to (1) determine the key fluorescent characteristics of DOM using the 10+ years dataset collected**by Guéguen's group in the Arctic Ocean and Canadian rivers and (2) to assess ruggedness, durability and**sensitivity of the developed portable 3D fluorometer in Arctic conditions. This cutting edge instrument will be**the first of its kind to measure near real time 3D fluorescence of waters. This new Canadian-developed**technology can be rapidly deployed to monitor natural water conditions as well as man-made spills and**leakages including petroleum and oil spills and wastewater leakage controls in Canada and elsewhere.
