Dissolved organic matter (DOM) regulates the transport and bioavailability of metals in aquatic ecosystems and, despite its prominent environmental role, its characterisation and reactivity toward metals are still matters of debate. A multivariate approach for the biogeochemical characterization of DOM will be developed and applied to DOM from various aquatic ecosystems including terrestrial and marine arctic systems. By bridging laboratory experiments and in situ observations, this innovative research program will yield a comprehensive understanding of the fate and mobility of metals and of the impact of environmental constraints on pollutant pathways. The results of this research program will provide a more reliable tool to risks assessors for the prediction of both anthropogenic impact and environmental change.
