The cost and time devoted to conducting experimental machining tests (purchasing materials, inserts, and**toolholders, preparing experimental set-ups, ...) and subsequent costly, time-consuming measuring residual**stress can be eliminated by developing 3D finite element (FE) modeling of turning processes and providing a**virtual laboratory using the FE models created in the FE software. In addition, FE simulations can provide**much insight to understand what happens to the machining variables in the workpiece and tool during the**cutting process, which are not possible using experiments. This assists to control and optimize machining**characteristics such as temperature and surface integrity including residual stresses. The proposed research**aims at fulfilling the above major objectives using the general- and multi-purpose Abaqus software package.
