Our planet is an increasingly urbanized landscape with 55% of the world's population and 82% of Canadians residing in cities. Cities represent novel ecosystems with no natural analog, in which urbanization causes increased pollution, warmer temperatures, greater impervious surface cover, fragmentation of natural habitats and homogenization of biotic communities. Marc Johnson's research asks: Can species adapt to these urban environments, and what are the ecosystem-level effects of urban evolution? Through the combination of genomics and statistical modelling with large-scale experiments, this work will establish how the evolution and ecology of species contribute to the sustainability of urban environments.
