Not unlike people in communities, quantum mechanical particles find ways to act together, to benefit the whole, when placed under favourable conditions. Through these communal behaviours, quantum effects usually associated with microscopic particles become accessible and exploitable at human length scales -- permitting the realization of effects like superconductivity associated with lossless electrical transmission and exponentially more powerful "quantum" computation. Experiments with laser-cooled ultracold quantum gases provide an ideal testing ground for exploring, manipulating, measuring, and accessing these phenomena. With these tools, we can explore the origins of quantum many-body physics and engineer systems displaying new manifestations of this quantum communality.
