英文摘要
This proposed research aims to establish a reliability-based serviceability design method for footings in the**Greater Toronto Area. In most cases, the serviceability design of a footing normally governs the design. Many**variables and uncertainties are involved in the design, in particular, highly variable glacial deposits found**throughout the GTA, which can easily lead to an inconsistent and conservative design. This study applies the**finite element method to develop the test dataset and, then, applies artificial neural networks to optimize the**non-linear relationship between input parameters and settlement. In the end, a reliability-based design method**for footings in the GTA will be provided to support cost-effective infrastructure developments in Canada. This**project will crucially involve the training of two highly qualified personnel to solve real engineering problems
