The proposed research is to develop a Web-based geotechnical field monitoring system that facilitates data management and communication and helps management make decisions. This project is in collaboration with Frontop Engineering Limited to develop the monitoring system for enhancing its services to its clients, including TTC. Field monitoring plays a vital rule in geotechnical construction to verify the design assumptions and permit maximum economy and assurance of safety. Many sensing devices have been developed for geotechnical field measurements. The vast quantities of monitoring data measured from these devices make the efficient communication among project participants a challenging task. In some cases, the distance between the offices and the project site renders the communication even harder. An internet-enabled database technique can overcome these challenges to distribute monitoring data in near-real time and make it available for management decisions. Nowadays, database management systems can sufficiently manage enormous volumes of information, while internet technologies can instantly gather and disperse information among project participants without geographic boundaries. This proposed research is to combine database and Web technologies to significantly benefit the monitoring data management and communication process. A series of Web pages will be developed to allow end users to access the information using a Web browser and request the necessary information from the database. In addition, a knowledge base will be developed to highlight those potentially problematic parameters and alert project participants for the prevention and resolution of hazards. The proposed system will facilitate field data management and communication and help the safe infrastructure development in Canada.
