This research program aims to develop combined scientific and humanistic research on a*little-studied musical parameter, the timbre of musical instruments (including *electric and electronic ones). It will explore the roles that timbre plays in the *perception of musical materials and forms as well as in their emotional impact on*listeners through orchestration practice in classical, popular and world musics. Its *major accomplishments will be the establishment of a perceptual foundation for*orchestration theory and the creation of open-access tools for orchestration science*and orchestral creation, including an orchestration analysis database and online*orchestration pedagogy resource based on perceptual principles.
