Music Perception and Cognition

This research program aims to develop combined scientific and humanistic research on alittle-studied musical parameter, the timbre of musical instruments (including electric and electronic ones). It will explore the roles that timbre plays in the perception of musical materials and forms as well as in their emotional impact onlisteners through orchestration practice in classical, popular and world musics. Its major accomplishments will be the establishment of a perceptual foundation fororchestration theory and the creation of open-access tools for orchestration scienceand orchestral creation, including an orchestration analysis database and onlineorchestration pedagogy resource based on perceptual principles.
