英文摘要
The proposed 5-year research program relates to the exceptional discovery potential of Specialty Glass Fibers (SGF), an innovative line of research where Physics, Fiber optics, and Materials sciences converge, bringing transformative concepts, new application paradigms, and technological impact to a wide range of knowledge-users. The objective of the research program consists of the long-term study of SGFs, and of the interrelation between Materials science, Physics, and Chemistry, that imparts creativity and innovation to this line of inquiry which is at the heart of many recent high-impact research advances in telecommunications, health care, energy production, and environmental monitoring. This research program will involve the training of highly qualified personnel in the field of optics, photonics, chemistry, materials sciences, and physics, within research units that raise the standard for best practice.***Specifically, the proposed research program aims at stimulating a broad spectrum of scientific and technological outcomes from innovative glass fibers, promoting and maintaining a diversified base of high-quality research in glass science, while leveraging top Canadian research infrastructures in order to foster research excellence and to provide a stimulating environment for research training:***1- DISCOVERY RESEARCH: Research new materials, new geometries, and new functionalization in glasses and glass fibers, and explore novel challenges and potentially transformative concepts for specialty glass fibers;***2- INNOVATIVE OUTREACH: Innovate, discover new application paradigms, and create technological impact to a wide range of knowledge-users and technology-users in academia and industry, at the national and international levels;***3- EXCELLENCE PROGRAM: Support the long-term ongoing excellence research program of Canada's Excellence Research Chair in Photonic Innovations (CERC), and leverage the state of the art infrastructures already set up at Laval University for Specialty Glass Fibers research;***4- WORLD LEADERSHIP: Make Canada a world leader in glass materials research and innovative fiber technologies, and maintain world leadership through a critical mass of research excellence training for highly qualified personnel in advanced glass science and technologies.**
