英文摘要
Mixing processes in water bodies involves various phenomena at small and large scales. At "small" scales such as outfalls, rotation effects are not significant while at large scales they are important. At large scales such as "Great Lakes" and oceanic problems, Coriolis effect can play an important role. Numerical simulation of mixing processes is a challenging issue, both from numerical aspects and from modelling strategies. It is in the best interest of the numerical modelling community to obtain faster and more accurate methods to improve simulations. The proposed research program is aimed at the development of accurate and efficient tools for simulating flow and mixing processes in water resources, based on the applicant's background in high-performance computing and fluid mechanics. In this research, the new, highly accurate temporal and spatial numerical methods recently proposed by the applicant for free surface flows will be extended to simulate mixing processes in three dimensions. Moreover, recent developments by the applicant in modeling turbulent buoyant outfalls will be expanded to more practical cases and the impact of free surface processes such as waves on mixing will be further examined. At larger scales, interaction of waves and turbulence occurs under the Coriolis effect, which is not yet well understood. Correct modelling of these interactions is crucial for ocean modelling and simulation of climate changes. The emergence of large-scale flows such as oceanic jets from small-scale turbulence has been also studied by the applicant, and appropriate numerical methods have been also proposed, which will be further expanded and studied in this research program.**
