Small water supply systems are an important part of the drinking water industry in North America, accounting for more than 90% of the water systems. Many small systems, however, face challenges with respect to their operation due to remoteness and lack of operator support and adequate training. Incorporating real-time monitoring along with on-line support mechanism and platform will offer the opportunity to improve their operational efficiency and hence the safety of the treated water. Converting real-time data into actionable information enables operators to more effectively operate and troubleshoot problems in these systems. ****This research, initiated at UBC with active participation of Filterco water treatment Ltd., aims to address this challenge and examine opportunities for real-time and remote water quality monitoring strategies that support local water operators in their day-to-day activities and operation of the treatment system.****The initial stage of the project will involve a thorough review of the available literature, technical reports, white papers, and patents in order to gather information and data on existing and emerging technologies for real-time monitoring. The second stage will consist of developing a low cost, simple smart water quality monitoring system, using a controller with inbuilt Wi-Fi module, which will be evaluated through parallel laboratory testing and assessment.
