Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria. Phages are now recognized as most abundant biological entities on our planet, outnumbering bacteria by an estimated 10-fold. Phages play major roles in the ecological balance of the microbial life. The global aim of this Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) is to increase fundamental knowledge in phage biology using an integrative strategy. The specific research areas will include the control of phages in food fermentations, the use of phages in preventing bacterial diseases as well as in bioaerosol research (aerovirology) and in viral ecology.
