Materials scientists have long sought to exploit non-equilibrium processes to control the property microstructure relationship in materials. Computational modeling holds enormous promise in this endeavor as it can probe conditions inaccessible to experiment and serve as a tool for predictive design. My research uses high performance computing (HPC) to model solidification and solid-state microstructure evolution and reaction-diffusion kinetics in materials processes. Collective microstructure phenomena will be used to understand properties on industrially relevant length scales. The proposed research will draw on my experience in condensed matter physics, materials engineering and HPC, and will exploit the CLUMEQ supercomputing facility.
