Materials scientists have long sought to exploit non-equilibrium processes to controlthe property-microstructure relationship in engineering materials. Computationalmodelling holds enormous promise in this endeavour as a predictive design tool in the quest to optimize the performance of manufactured products. The proposed research program will develop and apply novel hybrid atomic-continuum computational modelling tools to study and elucidate microstructure evolution phenomena during solidification and solid-state processing in metals and their alloys. The research program will draw on the applicant's expertise in condensed matter physics, materialsengineering and high-performance computing, and integrate modelling and experiment through several established Canadian research collaborations.
