英文摘要
Developing new technologies for emerging issues in society is a key mandate for scientists and engineers. Establishing a sustainable environment and healthy economy is critical to everyday life, this includes following the "3 R's" of "reduce, reuse and recycle". Part of the "reduce" component of sustainable living must also include the reduction of food waste of which spoilage is a major component, and in this context, the ability to extend the shelf life of our food is a key agenda item. The project outlined in this proposal is a synergistic partnership between Western University and Solvay Group (Cytec-Solvay)who with their combined expertise are generating a new approach to food packaging that aims to have a dramatic, positive impact on food storage. There have been no new innovations in this area in over a decade. By taking advantage of some newly developed polymer chemistry by researchers at Western, we anticipate making a major advancement in this area. We anticipate that the technology will be readily transferred to the industry partner for commercialization.**
