The Agfoods sector in the Lower Mainland region of B.C. is a highly competitive marketplace, through**providing high quality food products, with international-level safety standards. From a technological**perspective, a core element in the supply chain of this sector is manufacturing of high performance ovens**utilized within modular kitchens, coupled with high energy efficiency, speed of cooking, and low maintenance**costs. Possible scientific recommendations for improvements of mobile tandoor ovens are sought in this**NSERC project, by exploring and testing hybrid composite materials as an alternative to the currently used clay**tandoor ovens. A multicriteria design selection approach will be employed where thermal properties along with**durability, light weight, low cost, food-safe compatibility, ease of cleaning, and robust thermal performance**will constitute the selection criteria. The hybrid composite material systems to fabricate and test will include**silica-fume and carbon-fiber impregnated cement, silica-fume and latex particle impregnated cement, expanded**perlite-fumed silica cement composite, as well as glass wool stacks with interstitial layers of aluminum**sheeting.**Composite product development is a fast expanding field, with enormous global impact across industries**ranging from aerospace and transposition, to construction and home appliances. In particular, advancements in**the design of fiber and particulate reinforced composites have significantly aided industrial sectors to develop**novel lightweight products that can simultaneously embody improved functional properties**(mechanical/thermal/insulation/etc.), while tailoring them toward the context of each given application. The**application of composites in the Agfoods sector is deemed one of the first in the field and is expected to**increase the competitiveness of Commissary Connect and other related businesses accessing this new**technology.
