Governments traditionally use public comment sessions and town hall meetings to assess constituent opinion**on policy issues. These methods are vulnerable to a range of data input problems: they tend to capture only the**most extreme opinions; they are static, time consuming and expensive; they can easily be manipulated by**corporations or special interest groups. But the most damning critique of these methods is that they fail to**capture the wealth of data that most people share willingly every day: their online social media interactions.**Working closely with Nexalogy, the Systems Risk lab will develop a set of decision-making tools to help**governments understand and act on the voice of citizens by analyzing a wide array of social media posts and**communications. This approach will modernize the public comment process and help governments create**policies that are evidence-based.
