The Chair will investigate several open questions in number theory concerning the distribution of *prime numbers and the solution of equations in integers or rational numbers. These topics have *a distinguished history which can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and yet they are relevant *today in the development of error correcting codes and for cryptographic purposes. Work will *focus on the abc conjecture which is one of the most important conjectures in mathematics. It *provides a link between the additive and multiplicative structure of the integers and many of the *most interesting questions in number theory depend on this link.
