Black spotting in purebred white pigs is a recurring issue for the Canadian pig breeders. This causes issues in**relation to confidence of customers in the pedigree of the animals which are expected to be white due to the**presence of the dominant white locus in Yorkshire and Landrace pigs. This can be particularly troublesome for**export markets as it causes doubt regarding the control of mating in the breeding farms as well as the accuracy**of the pedigree. It also means that special processing of these hogs is required at packing plants which reduces**value for the pork industry. Although presence of coloured spotting has been a long-term problem for the**Canadian pork industry, there is no commercial tool available to address this issue.
